Sleepsuit, babygrow, romper, onesie - what do you call it?

Fewer differences than the number of words suggests. A baby sleepsuit has feet and long sleeves and is made for sleeping; a babygrow or Playsuit is much the same garment, the words used interchangeably here. A baby romper is generally footless, often short-sleeved or short-legged, made for daytime. Onesie, and coverall for all the rest. You'll also see all-in-one and bubble romper.

The fastening matters more than the name. Poppers down the front and inside the legs allow a change without a full undress. A two-way zip does the same more quickly, and opens from the bottom so only what's needed is undone. Both are here.

The cotton. GOTS certified organic cotton, or an organic cotton blend — which for a garment worn against the skin all day is the part worth caring about. GOTS certifies the whole chain: the fibre, the dyeing, the finishing, and the working conditions behind them. Great for delicate skin and for the environment.

Pair a knitted romper with a matching hat and blanket for a complete organic cotton baby gift set.

Organic cotton onesies, infant rompers, infant knit rompers, toddler onesies and organic newborn onesies — sleepsuits and babygrows from 0–3 months upwards.

FAQ's

What is the difference between a sleepsuit and a babygrow?

Very little — in the UK the words are used for the same garment. Both are long-sleeved all-in-ones, usually with enclosed feet.

What is the difference between a romper and a sleepsuit?

A romper is generally footless and made for daytime, often short-sleeved or short-legged. A sleepsuit covers the feet and is built for sleeping and cooler days.

Is a baby sleepsuit better with a zip or poppers?

Both have their place. A two-way zip is quicker and opens from the bottom for a change. Poppers lie flatter under a sleeping bag and give more control over how much is undone. Most people keep both.

How many sleepsuits does a newborn need?

Seven to ten in the smallest sizes is a realistic starting point. The number needed eases off gradually, so buy generously at 0–3 months and more sparingly after.

What should my baby wear to sleep?

A sleepsuit with a sleeping bag over it, choosing the bag's tog for the room temperature. The Lullaby Trust has clear current guidance on dressing a baby for sleep: lullabytrust.org.uk/baby-safety/baby-product-information/dress-your-baby-for-sleep/

How do I wash baby sleepsuits and babygrows?

Machine wash at 30 or 40 and hang to dry. We don't recommend tumble drying: heat fades prints, softens the elastic at cuffs and necklines, and sets shrinkage into cotton permanently. Air dried, they hold their size, shape and colour long enough to pass down.
