Merino for children, and why it is worth it

The layer that solves the cold-morning argument. A merino long sleeve under a school jumper does more than a second fleece, and takes up none of the room. It regulates temperature, so the child who is freezing at the bus stop is not boiling by second lesson.

Ski base layers that actually fit under a suit. Long sleeve top and the 24 Hour Trouser, thin enough to layer without bulk and warm enough to sit on a chairlift in. They move moisture away from the skin, so there is no clammy chill at the bottom of the run.

Good to sleep in. Merino holds a steady temperature through the night. For a child who kicks the covers off at two in the morning, it is the difference between waking up and staying asleep.

It does not itch, and it does not smell. At 17.5 micron this is ultrafine merino, not the scratchy wool of school vests. It also resists odour, so a top can be worn several days running and aired rather than washed. On a week away that matters.

Sizes 2-3 to 13-14 years. Unisex, in grey marle, midnight, French navy, emerald green, chocolate brown, ivory and pink peach blossom. ZQ-certified New Zealand wool, spun in Biella and made up in Portugal.

Kids merino base layers — thermal tops, tanks, polo necks, leggings and snoods for skiing, school and sleep. By Smalls, at the bonnie mob.

FAQ's

What age range does this cover?

2-3 years through to 13-14 years. The snoods come in a kids size and an adult size.

Are these good ski base layers for children?

Yes — a long sleeve top and the 24 Hour Trouser is the pairing. They sit flat under a ski suit, keep warmth in on the lift, and move moisture away so nobody gets a clammy chill on the way down.

Will it itch?

No. The itch people remember comes from coarse wool. This is 17.5 micron ultrafine merino, soft enough to wear next to the skin and to sleep in, and kind to sensitive skin.

Can they wear it in bed?

Yes, and plenty of parents buy it for exactly that. Merino holds a steady temperature overnight, which suits a child who throws the covers off.

How often does it need washing?

Far less than cotton. Merino resists odour, so airing overnight is usually enough. When it does need a wash it is machine washable at 30 on a wool cycle — dry it flat, never tumble dry.

Is it unisex?

Yes. The cuts and colours work for any child.

Where is it made?

The wool is ZQ-certified New Zealand merino, spun at an EMAS-certified mill in Biella, Italy, and made up at a family-run factory in Portugal.
