Zig and Star

Kids' shoes and boots from Ali McAleavy at Zig and Star. Podiatrist approved, shaped on the brand's own lasts, and built around a hidden midsole that lifts out to make room as feet grow — Ali calls it Good-To-Grow, and it is the reason one pair carries a child further up the size run.

I have known Ali for years and I love what she does. We have used her shoes on so many of our photoshoots that they have become part of how the bonniemob looks — the colours and the combinations sit beside the knitwear as though they were made for it. She spent nearly three years developing the first collection, working with UK last makers and a paediatric podiatrist, and you can feel that in the fit. Stocking Zig and Star was a very easy decision.

Jett is the one for first steps, barefoot-style and soft enough to bend with every stride. Astro is the t-bar, Atomic the double-strap school shoe, and Rockit the zip-up ankle boot. Infant sizes run EU 22 to 26, Junior EU 27 to 34, and Jett starts at EU 18.

Why Zig and Star

I have known Ali for years. Ali McAleavy started Zig and Star in 2017, and we have used her shoes on so many of our photoshoots that they have become part of how the bonniemob looks. The colours and the combinations sit beside the knitwear as though they were made for it.

Designed around the shape of a child's foot. Ali spent nearly three years on the first collection, working with UK last makers and a paediatric podiatrist, and had Zig and Star's own lasts made rather than buying in a standard shape. It is why the fit is so good.

Good-To-Grow. A hidden midsole inside each pair adjusts the fit between narrow and wide, and lifts out to leave extra room as feet grow. One pair carries a child further up the size run, which means fewer pairs outgrown and thrown away.

Podiatrist approved and recommended. Zig and Star's own claim, and one they make on every style apart from Jett.

Three fits, from first steps upwards. Jett for first steps at EU 18 to 23, Infant at EU 22 to 26 for roughly ages 2 to 5, and Junior at EU 27 to 34 for roughly 4 to 10. They fit true to size.

Zig and Star kids' shoes, school shoes, t-bars, ankle boots and barefoot baby shoes, stocked at the bonnie mob.

FAQ's

Who are Zig and Star?

A British children's footwear brand founded by Ali McAleavy in 2017. Tracey has known Ali for years and the shoes have been on the bonniemob's photoshoots for a long time before they were ever stocked here.

What does Good-To-Grow mean?

Each pair has a hidden midsole inside. Left in, it makes the fit narrower; lifted out, it makes the shoe wider and longer, so the same pair fits for longer as a foot grows.

Do they fit true to size?

Yes. Zig and Star shoes fit true to size, so order the size you would normally buy. The sizes shown are European.

Which style should I choose?

Jett is the barefoot-style shoe for first steps. Astro is the t-bar, Atomic is the double-strap shoe, and Rockit is the zip-up ankle boot. Atomic and Rockit both come in all-black for school.

What ages do they cover?

Jett runs EU 18 to 23. Infant styles run EU 22 to 26, roughly ages 2 to 5. Junior styles run EU 27 to 34, roughly ages 4 to 10.

Are they suitable for school?

The all-black Atomic school shoe and the all-black Rockit school boot are made for it, with a black sole.
