Merino for grown-ups

The camisole is the year-round one. Tracey wears hers all year. Fine merino is a summer fabric as much as a winter one — it breathes and moves moisture away, so it works in August as well as it does in January.

Ski underlayers, without the bulk. The long sleeve top and the 24 Hour Trouser go under a salopette and are forgotten about. The trouser comes in 190g lightweight for spring snow and everyday wear, and 280g heavyweight for a proper cold week.

Polo necks worth owning. In midnight, grey marle, emerald green and chocolate brown — good enough to wear on their own, thin enough to layer under everything else.

And a merino sleep mask. Pure merino, which is softer against the eye than silk and does not slide off. One of the kindest presents you can give someone who is not getting much sleep.

UK sizes S to XL. Made in Italy from the finest merino wool. Buy once, buy well — and then find you are not willing to pass it on.

Women's merino base layers — camisoles, polo necks, long sleeve tops, leggings and sleep masks in fine Italian merino. By Smalls, at the bonnie mob.

FAQ's

What sizes do you stock?

UK S, M, L and XL. The sleep masks and snoods are one size.

Can merino be worn in summer?

Yes. Fine merino breathes and moves moisture away from the skin, so it regulates rather than insulates. The camisole is a year-round piece, not a winter one.

Which weight should I choose for skiing?

190g lightweight for spring snow, milder resorts and everyday wear. 280g heavyweight for a genuinely cold week, or if you feel the cold on the lift.

Is it itchy?

No. Fine merino is a far finer fibre than the wool most people associate with itching, which is why it can sit directly against the skin.

How do I wash it?

Cool wool cycle with wool detergent, dried flat away from direct heat. Never tumble dry. It needs washing far less often than cotton because merino resists odour.

Does it make a good gift for a new mum?

The camisoles and the pure merino sleep masks are the two to look at, and both appear on the gifts for new mums page. A sleep mask for someone who is not getting much sleep is a thoughtful present.

Where is it made?

Italy, from the finest merino wool, by Smalls.
