The bonnie mob's Top 5 Family Friendly Festivals 2017

by The Bonniemob on May 02, 2017

Now that we have May Bank Holiday out of the way, here in the UK we can begin to look forward to the summer, and for us it means Festivals! We don't get much sun here but we are a hardy lot and we brave festivals, rain or shine. Over the years, we are becoming increasingly spoiled with our choice of Family Friendly Festivals...kids are big business and to cater for them is as important as for the big-ones.

We've rounded up a little selection of our favourite festivals in 2017 - some boutique, some epic and all fantastic for all the family.

Funk the Family - Hove Park // Brighton & Hove - 18th June 2017

Funk the Family

We are a little biased on this one as Funk the Family is right on our doorstep...but it's still a corker. Not only are all the kids activities free once you are through the gates, there is more than enough to keep them occupied. In their 4th year, this boutique festival boasts a huge main stage with headline acts to include Jazzy B (from Soul II Soul) and House Gospel Choir. Other fab things include kids illustrator Nick Sharratt, Circus Project Trapeze, Professor Elemental and Jenna & the G's. If you've got a sporty type, they can look forward to Break-dancing workshops, Parkour and Soccer workshops among many other things. Be quick getting tickets though - www.funkthefamily.co.uk

Curious Arts Festival - Pylewell Park // Hampshire - 21-23 July

This boutique weekend festival looks set to be a super chilled one. "It’s very English on the one hand – expect fabulous novelists, exceptional historians, poet laureates, dogs on leads, gin and tonics, and sitting on a deckchair with a view of the Solent although you are just as likely to find yourself on a secret midnight bat-walk, betting your life-savings on the snail-racing, reciting a sonnet on top of an elegantly restored old routemaster or listening to some of the UK’s most exciting musicians." Wow, sounds lovely!

Music lovers can expect sweet sounds from Tom Odell and Izzy Bizu. Think lazy afternoons with G&T's. Literary lovers can immerse themselves with Dave Eggers and Joanna Trollope OBE and kids aren't missed out here with bedtime stories by Paul Blezard and Jabberwocky Hunt. This one seriously covers all the basis for all the deep thinking families out there.

The Big Feastival  - Alex James' Farm // The Cotswalds 25-27th August 2017

Big Feastival

What do you get when Alex James farm hosts a festival in the beautiful Cotswalds countryside? A unique boutique festival combining love of food and family friendly events.

Along with best friend Jamie Oliver, Alex James has curated a "feast" for the senses with cooking workshops for all your favourite cuisines..artisan food and drink markets, banquets, a cheese hub and recipe corners. This year music wise they've picked Hacienda Classical, Olly Murs and Madness as their headliners, an eclectic selection if we do say so ourselves. The kids couldn't wish for more at this one with Justin Fletcher, aka Mr Tumble, Dick and Dom and Paw Patrol, yes you heard right, Paw Patrol!

Wilderness Festival - 3-6th August 2017 // Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire

Wilderness Festival 2017

The festival of choice for 2016 we believe, this eloquently curated festival could host the whole family because the entire 4 day/night experience is a package in itself. They only sell weekend tickets because the encourage all to stay for the duration. The kids can look forward to Green Caterpillar Forest Overnight Camps, Pimp my Pineapple workshops, a huge communal Wilderness Cricket Match and Macaroon Art plus more!

You need to be properly immersed in the Wilderness Experience and to help, music wise we are thinking along the lines of Grace Jones, Two Door Cinema Club and Bonobo from the BBC Music Main Stage.

Camp Bestival - 27-30th July 2017// Lulworth Castle, Dorset

Camp Bestival

Finally we come to the mother of all the kids festivals, a huge and sprawling boutique gathering by the Bestival People. The have it all covered kid-wise, it's a non-stop party for those little legs for 3 whole days. This year promises The School of Rock, the musical, Dick and Dom, Mr Tumble and lots lots more.

Make sure you plan your costumes to fit the theme of Rockstars and Popstars and get involved.

So no matter which style of festival that you are searching for your family, there are lots to choose from. Festivals are a super way to get lost in your own imaginations for a few days, be among like minded people, eat well, discover new things and best of all, spend as much time outside as possible. All our Bonnie mob team try and get to a family festival at least once year, it's so much fun! A little time spent away from the norm and gain memories to inspire the children long after they've returned home and the tents back in storage.

We also interviewed Lucy, director of Funk the Family Festival - read this here and see our festival survival kit on this post too!
