Baby and toddler knitwear, made properly

Knitwear is what the bonnie mob is built on. Everything here is fully fashioned — each panel shaped on the machine itself, stitches added and dropped to form the armhole, the shoulder, the neckline. Nothing is cut, so nothing is wasted, and there are no raw edges hidden inside the seams to work loose. It is slower, it uses considerably less yarn, and it produces the details that mark out fine knitwear: fully fashioned marks running up the raglan, ribbing that meets the body cleanly, a shoulder set exactly where it should sit.

The yarns. GOTS certified organic cotton, and organic cotton blended with cashmere for the softest pieces. Cashmere fibre is exceptionally fine, which is what makes it soft against new skin — and warm for its weight, so a baby is kept warm without bulk to move in. Merino wool for the winter hats, fine enough never to prickle.

The whole collection, knitted. Cardigans and jumpers, knitted rompers and onesies, knitted leggings and joggers, bonnets, beanies and blankets — in fairisle, pointelle, colour-block, space-dye and rainbow stripe. Pieces designed to sit together, so a newborn knit set can be built from a romper, a hat and a blanket in one colourway.

Machine washable, including the cashmere. Every knitted piece goes into the machine on a wool or delicate cycle at 30 degrees. So much children's knitwear arrives hand-wash or dry-clean only, which means it stays in the drawer.

Made to be passed down. Shaped panels, no raw edges, good yarn and a construction that holds its form through years of washing — which is why these are the pieces that reach a second and third child. We love nothing more than seeing photographs of a bonniemob piece being passed down to a second, third or even fourth sibling. That is exactly what it was made for.

Knitted by someone who knows how

the bonnie mob was founded by Tracey Samuel, who trained at Central Saint Martins and designed knitwear for Sonia Rykiel, Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren before turning to children's clothes. She is a self-confessed knit geek, happiest developing her own yarns to make her own fabrics to make her own knitwear — the space-dye running through this collection is hers, from the yarn up.

Room to grow. Most bonniemob knits are made with turn-back cuffs, so sleeves can be let down as they grow. One size fits for far longer — the simplest sustainability there is, and part of the reason our knits get passed down so often.
