Why muslin

Muslin is a loose, open weave, and that's the whole point of it. Air moves through it, so it stays breathable and light, and it dries quickly. The bonniemob muslins are GOTS certified organic cotton and beautifully soft from the very first use — then softer still with every wash, as the weave relaxes into that slouchy handle that makes muslin what it is.

Squares and swaddles. A muslin square is the everyday size: for feeding, for a shoulder, for shading a face. A swaddle blanket is considerably more generous, cut large enough to wrap properly. Same weave, different scale.

On swaddling. The Lullaby Trust publishes clear, current guidance on swaddling safely, including when to stop. It's the better source for it, and we'd rather point you there: lullabytrust.org.uk/baby-safety/baby-product-information/swaddling/

As a gift. Muslins are among the most welcome presents you can give — useful from the first day, no sizing to guess, and always wanted. A set of muslins with a hat or a pair of booties makes a complete gift.

Organic muslin blankets, infant muslin blankets, muslin squares, muslin cloths, swaddles and infant swaddle blankets. Same cloth, different names.

FAQ's

How many muslins does a newborn need?

Six is a good starting point, a dozen if you'd rather wash less often. They're the item people most often come back for.

What is the difference between a muslin square and a swaddle blanket?

Size. A muslin square is the smaller everyday cloth; a swaddle blanket is cut large enough to wrap a baby properly. Both are the same breathable open weave.

Do muslins get softer with washing?

Noticeably. The open weave relaxes each time, so a well-washed muslin is the softest one you own. Wash new muslins once or twice before first use.

Can I use a muslin as a pram cover?

On a warm day a clip-on sunshade or parasol is the better choice, as it shades without reducing the airflow around the pram.

Are the muslins organic cotton?

Yes, GOTS certified organic cotton — certified across the whole chain, from the fibre through the dyeing and finishing to the working conditions behind them.

How do I wash muslins?

Machine wash at 30 or 40 and hang to dry — they're dry within the hour. We don't recommend tumble drying: the heat tightens the weave and lifts the surface fibres, dulling the colour. Line dried, muslins simply keep getting softer.
